I say ‘Should Be’ but let’s be honest. It’s not shocking in the slightest. We’ve all become almost desensitized to new stories about priests ‘clericalizing’ each other and getting caught in the act of rampant clericalism, yet it should shock us nonetheless when it happens.
A new book will be released during the Bishop’s Sex Abuse Summit in Rome next week. It makes the startling claim that 80% of Vatican priests are gay. That is at least 35x higher than the rate among the lay population of Italy. Kind of weird, right? It’s also weird that Pope Francis surrounds himself with as many men who live that lifestyle, men like Cardinal Cocopalmiero and Bishop Zanchetta. It makes you ask ‘what’s going on?’
