A change to the Code of Canon Law was made that virtually no one noticed is going to cause a lot of woe.

That’s an interesting change. Canon 1373, in the 1983 Code (looking at the English translation I bought back then) says:
Can. 1373 — A person who publicly incites in his or her subjects to hatred or animosity against the Apostolic See or the Ordinary because of some act of ecclesiastical authority or ministry, or who provokes the subjects to disobedience against them, is to be punished by interdict or other just penalties.
Now it reads:
Can. 1373 — A person who publicly incites hatred or animosity against the Apostolic See or the Ordinary because of some act of ecclesiastical office or duty, or who provokes disobedience against them, is to be punished by interdict or other just penalties.
Now, I’m not a Canon Lawyer, but a casual reading of above changes the thrust from basically a political ruler (king, president, premier, etc.) leading his subjects against the Pope or a bishop can incur the penalty of Interdict–presumably in their country or whatever political division they rule, to NOW basically being a tool by which they can censure and go after ANYONE who doesn’t care for the pope, bishop or their policies.
Subtle like a chainsaw! :-/
WHEN! . . are they (Bergoglians, Traditionalists, or any Ecclesial “expert” in between) going to make the ALWAYS necessary distinction between: the Pope SPEAKING FROM THE CHAIR OF ST.PETER —”Ex Cathedra” —on matters of FAITH AND MORALS (which HAVE to be believed by Baptized Catholics) and the Pope, saying this, that, and the other thing on any topic, i.e. GIVING HIS PERSONAL OPINION (which does NOT have to be believed) ??
But even here, how can the Laity ( . . and the Clergy) decide, when history has not yet declared on Jorge Bergoglio, who sits in St.Peter’s Chair, whether or not his key statements and documents contain Heresy or veer from the Sacred Deposit of the Faith ??
We must keep on praying for the man ( . . and the Church) ! . . with a “Hope beyond hope”, thus remaining faithful to one’s own Baptism AND ITS LEGITIMACY WITHIN THE CHURCH FOUNDED BY CHRIST (fully Human AND fully Divine . . . and, therefore, ALL Holy because of its Head and Founder).
“Even if the Pope were Satan incarnate, we [ Baptized Catholics ] ought not to raise up our heads against him . . I know very well that many defend themselves by boasting: ‘They are so corrupt, and work all manner of evil!’ But God has commanded that, even if the priests, the pastors, and Christ-on-earth (the Pope) were incarnate devils, we are to be obedient and subject to them, NOT FOR THEIR SAKES, but FOR THE SAKE OF GOD,
and out of obedience to Him, the Sweet Christ.” —St. Catherine of Siena.
For ourselves, this is a huge and deep mystery. So we simply
( and blindly) keep on praying for Pope Francis, daily . . kind of like opting FOR for the existence of God as expressed in Pascal’s wager.
May I place a bet on who Bergoglio will fire canon 1373 on first?
I say Ann Barnhardt because for her advocacy of a certain thesis and for being a public gadfly in general.
She’s already looking in the mail for the paper to frame on her wall.
