The funeral was very interesting. It looked to be a demonstration of heart felt and hard line beliefs.
Compare it to the funeral of Queen Elizabeth whose demise was mourned but expected due to her age and ill health. It was respectful.
As for Pope Benedict, even a hearse, perhaps with a few flowers, was deemed less suitable than a plain utility delivery van. The Vatican has great expertise in communicating with and without words.
But isn’t this post mortem treatment by Francis

sample of Francis’s oft-mentioned VINDICTIVENESS?
Benedict’s legacy in his Summorum Pontificum would
—in Francis’s eyes —be “Rigidity” in spades, “bending
over backwards”, as it does, to expand the use of the
Apostolic Latin Mass, whereas Francis’s MEAN anti-Latin
Liturgy document is the intended death-knell of Summorum
in the “dog-fight” over Sacred Deposit skies . . though
Benedict was, is, nor will be anything but a warring
“sparring partner”.
