A New York Appeals Court ruled in favor of transferring the remains of Venerable Fulton J Sheen from New York to Peoria. If the ruling stands, and there’s no reason to think it shouldn’t, then the final hurdle to his canonization has been cleared, much to the chagrin of the likes of the late Cardinal Spellman.
Sheen represents a better time in the Church and in America. A time where Catholics stood up against the worst impulses of our culture, a time when Catholics prevented Hollywood from promoting pornography thinly-veiled as art, a time when abortion was otherwise unthinkable to the vast majority of us, and a time when family was still something we protected instead of undermined. The fact that New York has been blocking the transfer of his remains to Peoria is appalling but ultimately a sign of the times we live in.
Fulton J Sheen, Ora Pro Nobis.
