Bishop Marian Eleganti’s letter
Commentary by Auxiliary Bishop emeritus Dr. theol. Marian Eleganti OSB on the final document of the Synod on Synodality.
As long as the dam, which the blockers (the “Indietristen”) are trying to defend, continues to flow (the so-called irreversible processes), the hope of the reformers remains intact. This hope includes the female diaconate, perhaps married priests in the future, and already now shared decision-making in new mixed councils (and corresponding canon law adjustments). They aim to bind the hierarchy to majority votes. Furthermore, there is hope for a cultural regionalization of doctrine and discipline (e.g., regarding the implementation of the LGBT agenda, which has a hard time in Africa but not in the West), because the corresponding demands cannot be enforced universally. For this, an increase in the teaching authority of bishops’ conferences (God forbid!) would be a prerequisite. This would mark the end of the Catholicity of the Church, if in Poland, for example, something different applies than in Germany or Africa.
At least, as far as the sacred office for women is concerned, it remains a waiting for Godot. More than one blessing is for you not to use, so my explanation. At least, the final document reached the declaration that the question allegedly remains open and has not already been decided (negatively) by statements from Pope Francis. Personally, I do not believe it. In reality, this door has long since been closed by John Paul II. So, Francis clarified this once again. But one can signal right while turning left.
The so-called deaconesses from the early church were certainly not deacons in the sacramental sense, nor were they parish leaders. In fact, pastoral assistants in our regions already do more today than the deaconesses of the past, who, as a historically conditioned phenomenon, disappeared or became unnecessary due to societal changes at the time. New women’s roles in church administration (the “bureaucratization” of women), catechesis, or “listening” pastoral care (see the postsynodal suggestions of the penultimate Synod, whose non-implementation was lamented and urged by Cardinal Fernández) are not really what the reformers want at their core, but as a form of “participation in power” or pseudo-innovation, they are still steps in the right direction for them, mere band-aids for the wounds caused by their unmet maximal demands (also not met in the last Synod).
Starting from the above (a dismissive term by Cardinal Timothy Radcliffe to describe the “scanning” of the document), the synodal document tries to pass over every semantic rift, so that the “hot irons” can continue as before. In general, the synodal results from previous synods have been meager. The youth synod literally vaporized. The massive effort in its preparation was wasted, as was the post-synodal document. I had nothing more to say before I could get away with it. The Amazon synod was also a disappointment for the reformers, though some bishops in the Amazon region continue to implement their own vision, regardless of where the universal Church stands with its synods. Who cares?
Contrary to the principles of synodality, the “hot” topics were removed by the Pope from the main assembly and, for the umpteenth time, handed over to a commission (there are at least ten) for further study. But Godot will not come. The results are expected for the summer of 2025, still as part of the synodal process, which was officially concluded in October 2024 with the Synod on Synodality. The Synod is over in this sense, but not the synodal process, they say. Now the real work begins, because the local implementation is now decisive, they claim.
The corridor of the clerical mindset of the reformers is very narrow. Once you get the feeling that you actually have participation, but in many councils, commissions, working groups, specialized offices, associations, and synods, they are already present? In most of these bodies, the same business or questions are discussed, at least in Switzerland.
To at least document some progress or tangible results of the synodal process, synodal councils are to be established. The creation of statutes and the appointment of people to these councils are proceeding at full speed. In our country, these are almost the same people we already encounter at all levels. Once again, we were born, we were happy.
One has to look into the jam-packed agendas of bishops and full-time laypeople to understand how much we are going in circles, repeatedly starting from scratch. The people of God, in any case, remain largely excluded and, not without reason, have little interest in the synodal process. This already applies to their previous participation in the process, which has been largely driven by ecclesiastically socialized professionals. We hardly reach even a percentage of the involvement of the people of God. And since, as one online survey on synodality truly expressed, there was a swift negative vote within 24 hours (I didn’t count them), only to be quickly taken down.
If one would ever understand what the prophetic task of the laity according to the conciliar texts would be, where they, as baptized and overwhelming majority, are placed and sent by God! But no, the role they play in worship or in a committee matters – as democracy from below versus the sacramental hierarchy from above. So many, at least, let the last Synod show that the sacramental hierarchy is not up for discussion. Secular parameters like the separation of powers and control of authority would destroy it. This is also the reason why the Pope has repeatedly rejected any form of synodal parliamentarism. The conversation in the spirit is something else.
If you try to understand what the reformers really want, it all comes down to the same thing. The entry of the impulse vehicle, the final document of the previously mentioned words and considerations, will be played off with a good face. For the principle of synodality and the Synod on it in particular should not be spoken of negatively. That would harm their cause. They also invest, as before, in regional solutions and feel supported in this by the Synod. That’s it. Who will be the decision-makers or decision-takers at the end – and this is the question of all questions – seems to remain post-synodally open for them. In this regard, canonical adjustments are expected. Don’t ask for clarification; how would you like it? Bishop Oster, however, stated that the Synod had clearly shown that the bishops are the decision-takers, as they are appointed by Christ as pastors with authority to lead and represent Christ. Thus, the synodal process will only have an advisory function in the future. But this is not what the reformers want.
The Pope is sovereign anyway, can intervene anywhere, and be judged by no one. He has already done so abundantly. Behind the scenes, he and his allies have clearly directed the synodal process. This can be seen from the ship. That’s why it will be necessary to “reflect” on his role in the new synodality, they say. “Fiducia supplicans” was, in any case, also a (synodal) sin because there was no synodal mandate for it. Cardinal Fernández himself advanced after the penultimate partial synod, and Francis backed him up. They behave, as one can see, rather freely in the hierarchy towards the synodal process.
In the end, those are decisive who make and present the texts or “moderate” the process, to avoid saying “direct” it. The appeal to the Holy Spirit seems strained. They, and foremost the Pope, decide what comes out as binding. The extensive surveys in the preparation phase change nothing about that. For the conservatives, the intervention of the Pope in certain matters was welcome, while for the reformers, it was a source of frustration. Therefore, in October, there was an attempt to bring the issues that had been relegated to the commissions somehow into the conversation and the media. Cardinal Fernández first had to represent himself when a discussion was held outside the main assembly but was then willing to exchange ideas on the female diaconate to calm the stirred spirits over his absence. So, on this question, they are in a new round, which will continue until the summer of 2025.
Clarity under this pontificate is a rare thing. Will the farce of repeatedly reopening already tied packages ever stop? God alone knows. I don’t expect it anytime soon.
