1. I’m curious what they can actually do to prevent same-sex attracted individuals from entering seminaries. Perhaps thorough interviews of close friends and family? It’s a lofty goal, and Francis seems to be playing both sides of the issue like his usual Peronist self.

      You hit the nail on the head – “what” to do, it is a conundrum.

      How do you make determinations of character and potential associated behaviors ?How do you discern ? And what do you do after the fact if things “go bad” ?

      There are analogous hypothetical circumstances to consider. Does a murderer know years in advance that he/she WILL BE a murderer? When did the inclination to be a murderer or murder enter ? Had a seed been planted in early childhood ? Physical child abuse ?

      Similarly, when did Judas decide TO BE a traitor for silver ? You might recall Judas is identified as having been a big advocate for sound economic management ( did not like expensive aromatic oil being used in a “wasteful” manner) .

      It follows , in the sexual realm , it is the act which is a first order offense before any “excuse” might be given; in essence the act is adultry (it’s not “gay” or a womanizer) ;it’s a violation of oath to Christ and His Church .

      It then flows, what is the consequence when an individuals conduct is adjudicated due to scandal?

      a.Resignation from ministry position ( divorce and remarriage ) ?
      b.Confession ( penance and by what form ) ?
      c.Laicization (“fired” for cause ) ?
      d. A & B
      d.All of the above

      Yet , by the “time” anny end point might be reached, there is a greater concern , it is PREVENTION; an impossibility 100% because of a flawed and fallen human nature. On a daily basis each of us are making free will choices which can be anti-Christ or not .

      Which asks , what can be done ?
      1. Obviously, it starts with discernment by applicants and by seminaries ; it seems reasonable that an openly declared active sexual deviant or an application that gives a significant history of past deviancy should be rejected ? The Church is not “government” ;there is no right that any individual has to declare an entitlement to become a priest or deacon – it is a calling.

      2. The application process should make clear that any act of moral turpitude will not be tolerated in the formation process and may result in laicization
      in the event of known or reported acts of future moral turpitude once ordained .

      My thought , if all “process” were chrystal clear , as may at anytime be publically transparent, this would at the same time require an acknowledgment of His Real Presence – the extent to which any circumstance might be adjudicated would require a complete confession of The Truth ( no relativism allowed for a “lighter” penance ). Any adjudication as a canonical process would require a reliance on His Justice in keeping with the catechism and Church law . The extent to which His Mercy may or may not mitigate the severity of a judgement will always be His to provide.
