Its rather telling when the Bishops of the Church are arguing about whether public unrepentant sinners can access the Eucharist or not.

Hello Mr. Stine. You asked how to get Catholics to go confession more often…or even at all. One of the things that I’ve noticed from people is that in the old days, we went into a confessional, where the priest was separate from the lay-person confessing. In that scenario, they can even hide their face so that the priest may not know who they are. Nowadays, it’s face-to-face, and many people are believing that the priest will be looking at them “sideways” going forward, once they confess their sins. We all know that priests have heard all this before, but everyone thinks they are unique, and the priest will remember their sins and look at them differently. If there was some way to get back to the confessional, that may help. I know this isn’t the ONLY reason, but in my discussions with people, this came up much more frequently than other things.
